To better understand the institutional bias and internal forms of censorship in the corporate media, read:

  • The More You Watch, The Less You Know, by Danny Schechter
  • Into The Buzzsaw by Christine Borgesson. A former 60 Minutes producer tells how the careers of 19 corporate newspeople went 'into the buzzsaw' when they tried to tell the whole, unbiased story.
  • Rich Media, Poor Democracy by Robert W McChesney
  • Manufacturing Consent by Noam Chomsky

Below are a number of other preventive measures that should be taken to gradually build resistance in a population to any future MAWS outbreaks.

                                       EDUCATE

Today’s schools routinely teach sex education because of the dangers posed by teen pregnancy and STD. Previously, discussion of this subject matter was considered taboo in spite of the seriousness of these conditions for young adults. Similarly, it's now time to bring MAWS awareness into the classroom to educate young people to the very real risk to their lives that MAWS represents. For every assembly where military recruiters are allowed to make their pitch – demand equal time.  Invite a representative from Veteran’s for Peace, Veterans For Common Sense, or Vietnam Veterans Against the War to tell their stories and provide an alternative perspective to the students. No young person should be permitted within 100 yards of a military recruitment center without first checking out these websites:

                                 DEMOCRACY NOW

Just like the proverbial apple a day to keep the doctor away, a daily one-hour airing of Democracy Now will keep you in pretty good shape newswise.  Broadcast nationally on over 500 cable tv and radio stations, if Democracy Now isn’t available in your area, no worries. You can listen to archived daily shows Monday through Friday, from the Democracy Now website http://www.democracynow.org

Some people might think they can’t adjust to turning on their computers rather than their TV or radio for news. Others might feel they can’t adapt to news that isn’t ‘live’. But a live broadcast of stupefyingly shallow minutiae repeated ad nauseum provides only a false sense of being clued in, ‘up to the minute’. In the treatment and prevention measures outlined here, and in a hundred other creative ways, people everywhere can help stamp out MAWS. We can eradicate this blight on humanity in our lifetimes.

    It’s up to you.
